Lessons

Private Lessons

Music lessons are offered at the School of Music to students in Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Professional Schools.

Members of the Yale and New Haven communities who are not registered students and wish to hire a School of Music student should refer to the Gig List, which will provide information on students who are interested in teaching.

Instruction is available in the following areas: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion, Harp, Piano, Organ, Guitar, Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass.

Students interested in Composition, Choral Conducting, and Orchestral Conducting will find classes in the Department of Music and in the School of Music offered each academic semester.

Most students will receive instruction from graduate students enrolled in the School of Music, and some will study with members of the School of Music Faculty.

Students are enrolled in lessons in one of two ways: (1) Lessons for Credit or (2) Fee-Based Lessons. Lessons for credit are offered with faculty approval only, and certain undergraduate theory prerequisites apply.

How to Register

The application and audition period takes place in the Fall term only. All students interested in taking lessons must apply and audition for the faculty. Application and audition time selection is made online and the site generally goes live a week or two before classes begin. Auditions for the School of Music faculty normally take place during the first week of classes. Application and audition time selection can be made at:

http://apply.music.yale.edu/lessons

Students who have had lessons through the YSM before do not need to re-audition with the exception of the following instruments:

  • Voice
  • Guitar
  • Piano (Prof. Yang's studio only)
  • Oboe

However, returning non-credit students who would like to take lessons for credit must re-audition.

ALL returning students must fill out a Lesson Contract. Please submit it to Kelly Yamaguchi-Scanlon in Sprague Hall at 98 Wall Street.
