Certain to be a highlight of the 2009 Norfolk season, Metropolitan Opera star Dawn Upshaw will perform in recital with pianist Gilbert Kalish at the Music Shed. This special Tribute Concert to our patroness, Ellen Battell Stoeckel, in honor of the 70th anniversary of her death, recognizes her lifelong passion for vocal music. An amateur singer herself, Mrs. Stoeckel, with her husband Carl, founded the Litchfield County Choral Union in the late 19th century. The Music Shed, where Dawn Upshaw will perform, was built as a showcase for vocal music and has been the venue for many of the great singers of the 20th century. We are proud to continue this tradition with this special presentation.
Joining a rare natural warmth with a fierce commitment to the transforming communicative power of music, Dawn Upshaw has achieved worldwide recognition as a singer of opera and concert repertoire ranging from the sacred works of Bach to the freshest sounds of today. Her ability to reach to the heart of music and text has earned her both the devotion of an exceptionally diverse audience, and the awards and distinctions accorded only the most distinguished of artists.
Pianist Gilbert Kalish leads a musical life of unusual variety and breadth. | Join us in a celebration commemorating our great patroness, Ellen Battell Stoeckel, on the 70th anniversary of her death, with an afternoon of free events. There will be two concerts, on especially for children, and one for everybody featuring the Chamber Ensemble of the U. S. Coast Guard Band. Other events include games for children, tours and our annual open house/ice-cream social. All events throughout the day will be free and open to the public. |
