Irving S. Gilmore Music Library

The Irving S. Gilmore Music Library at Yale University is one of the largest collections of music scores, sound recordings, and music research materials in the United States. It holds approximately 100,000 scores and parts; 70,000 books about music; 35,000 recordings; 45,000 pieces of sheet music; and 425 active subscriptions to music periodicals; plus online resources, photographs, archival materials, individual music manuscripts, and microfilms of manuscripts and scores.

Library facilities include computer workstations and network connections and wireless capability for laptops, study carrels and reading tables, 40 listening stations, two video stations, a Clavinova, two seminar rooms, and the Rare Books Reading Room.

Highlights of the archival holdings include the complete papers and archives of Charles Ives, Virgil Thomson, Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, Carl Ruggles, Horatio Parker, Robert Shaw, Vladimir Horowitz, and Benny Goodman. The archives are particularly strong in American music and German music between the two World Wars.

Yale’s Collection of Historical Sound Recordings offers over 250,000 historical recordings by performers in Western classical music, jazz, and musical theater, as well as drama, literature, and history. The collection documents performance practice from the beginning of the recording era (ca. 1890) to the present day.

The American Musical Theatre Collection contains scores, sheet music, manuscripts, books, memorabilia, and recordings, available for scholarly research. Collections within the AMTC include the Cole Porter and E.Y. “Yip” Harburg Papers.

The library offers tours and research workshops to interested students. A series of exhibits enhances the library’s offerings. The Music Library is located inside Yale’s beautiful Sterling Memorial Library in the heart of campus.
